Positive duo suspended

THE Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) have confirmed that the two national athletes, who tested positive for banned substances earlier this year, are from their sport.

MWF president Datuk Ayub Rahmat disclosed that both athletes have been suspended from all activities until their hearing process.

"The MWF will give their full cooperation to the (independent) hearing panel that will be assembled and conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (Adamas)," said Ayub.

"We will take further action once the findings from the hearing and investigation have been obtained.

"We will not compromise with any athlete, coach or official involved in doping.

"The use of banned substances taints the image of this sport.

"We will also continue to work together with Adamas to implement more educational talks, workshops and courses to create more anti-doping awareness."

The news comes as another blow to the MWF, who have been struggling with doping issues in recent years.

No less than five doping cases (excluding the current two) have been recorded in the sport over the last five years.

In a bid to combat the issue, the MWF had imposed a "voluntary" one-year competition ban on all of their athletes from 2018-2019.

On top of that, Malaysia was last year handed a five-month ban from competitions by the International Weightlifting Federation due to a surge in doping violations in the country.
