Olympian Seow Hor dies at 85

KUALA LUMPUR: Two-time Olympian Fong Seow Hor died on Monday. He was 85.

The Penang-born Seow Hor came from a family of swimmers. His siblings, Seow Yoke, Seow San and Seow Jit were all great swimmers produced by the Penang Chinese Swimming Club in the 1950s.

Seow Hor represented the country when Malaya made its Olympic debut at the 1956 Melbourne edition. He finished seventh in the men's 200m butterfly, clocking 2:56.00, in Heat 3.

He then created history by becoming the first-ever swimmer to compete in two Olympic Games when he qualified for the 1960 Rome edition.

He had competed in the 200m butterfly and clocked 2:56.40 to finish seventh in Heat 5.

He was also a bronze medallist (4x100m) at the 1959 Bangkok SEAP Games.

He was inducted into the OCM Hall of Fame in 2013 for his efforts in developing the sport at the grassroots level.
