KUALA LUMPUR: Former national hockey player Wilfred "Freddy" Vias died today. He was 93.
The Olympian, fondly known as Uncle Freddy, died peacefully at his Petaling Jaya home at 1.45pm.
The former national captain was part of the Malayan team who played in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
Wilfred also served as secretary to both the Johor HA (1950-1953) and the Negri Sembilan HA (1956 -1957).
According to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), he played a huge role in the development of Malaysian sports, serving in various capacities at the Sports ministry.
He was also the director-general of the National Sports Council in 1981.
"The demise of Wilfred Vias is a great loss to Malaysian sports. May his soul rest in peace," the OCM said today.
Wilfred was inducted into the OCM Hall of Fame in 2014 for his contribution to the development of Malaysian sports.
