Seven field hockey players drafted for women's indoor mission

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven players from the national women's field hockey squad will play a different role in Bangkok on Aug 8-15.

They have been picked to represent Malaysia in the women's Indoor Asia Cup. Malaysia hope to improve on their fourth placing in 2019, also in Thailand.

National field hockey coach Nasihin Nubli said: "The seven field players have been released from camp for the women's Indoor Asia Cup. They must improve their skill and speed to play indoor hockey."

In 2019, Malaysia drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan but lost the bronze 1-0 on shootout. Kazakhstan were champions while Thailand finished second.

On the ongoing women's Junior Hockey League (JHL), Nasihin said his coaching staff were scouting for players to join the junior training programme.

"I have five Under-20 players in the women's JHL. While monitoring their progress, we are also scouting for players with talent as we want a bigger pool of national junior trainees.

"The end mission is to qualify for the Junior World Cup for the second time," Nasihin added.

Indoor Asia Cup Men: Thailand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Philippines, Iran, Indonesia, Taiwan. Women: Thailand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Cambodia, Philippines, Iran, Indonesia, Taiwan, Pakistan.
