Malaysia's BMX bikers shine in Asian championships

KUALA LUMPUR: The future looks bright for Malaysia's young BMX riders Eddyna Nasuhar Zainal Abidin, Amer Akbar Anuar and Saniy Syahmi Mohd Safie.

All three finished on the podium after a tough weekend of racing at the Asian Championships (Saturday) and Malaysian International Championships (Sunday) which were held back-to-back at the BMX National Arena in Nilai.

Eddyna claimed bronze in the women's Under-23 in both competitions. Amer took bronze in the men's Under-23 of the Asian meet, and Saniy finished third in the Under-23 class of the Malaysian International Championships.

Eddyna, 21, said: "Although they are both bronze medals, I am still happy because I gave it everything I had.

"I improved in the second race (Malaysian International) and was more competitive against my rivals."

Saniy said he was happy to bounce back with a medal in the Malaysian International Championships.

"I had a fever during the Asian Championships on Saturday and was unable to fight for medals

"I was determined to make up for it in this event and am happy that I was able to land a bronze." he said.

Riders from Japan dominated both the events, winning five out of the six gold on offer in the Asian Championships as well as four out of the six gold in the Malaysian International Championships.

Both events offered qualifying points for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
