National hockey player Hanis to face disciplinary committee over racial slur

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) will summon national player Hanis Nadia Onn for an internal investigation on her alleged racial slur in a social media posting.

The 26-year-old landed in hot water after her Instagram comment implied that it was smelly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil where the legendary Indian composer AR Rahman had held a concert last Saturday.

Hanis later apologised and deleted the comment.

Hanis said in her 10 years in hockey, she has played in a multiracial team and she was sorry for her negligence leading to the negative connotation of her comment.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said they view the matter seriously, and Hanis will be summoned to face the MHC disciplinary committee next week. The finding would be forwarded to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

"We are concerned over the matter and as the minister had said, there's no room for racism in sports. The minister has instructed MHC to investigate the matter.

"We have always reminded our athletes to be tactful with their conduct as they are public figures," said Subahan.
