KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day of ugly surprises, protests and missed opportunities for the Malaysian contingent at the Sea Games in Phnom Penh today.
After winning four gold to exceed their target, Malaysia's karatekas could have gone on to bag a fifth. But the men's team, apparently thinking they were well ahead, let their guard down, lost their focus and the gold as well when they were edged 3-2 by Vietnam in the final.
A furious coach Tamer Abdelraouf Mourssy scolded S. Prem Kumar and G. Kathish. And when he was giving Prem the hair dryer treatment, it led to the Egyptian coach being kicked out of the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre by the referee.
There was plenty of drama in track and field as well.
A technical error saw the hammer throw gold taken away from Malaysia's defending champion Jackie Wong despite his "winning" distance of 64.2m.
While Malaysian officials claimed to have proof that Jackie was the rightful winner, the Sea Games technical officials didn't think so. To them, Thailand's Kittipong Boonmawan threw a longer distance of 64.49m.
A similar incident happened in the women's hammer throw earlier in the morning, but thankfully Nurul Hidayah Lukman managed to hold on to her bronze.
Malaysia's first gold in track and field today came in the women's hammer throw event through Grace Wong who blew her rivals away with a games record of 61.88m. Grace erased her own mark of 59.24m set at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Games.
At the Morodok Techo Aquatics Centre, 21-year-old Kimberly Bong produced a surprise gold in the women's 3m springboard event.
Despite scoring only a total of 276.30 points, Kimberly was still the best. And this meant that the gold, won by Wendy Ng in the Hanoi edition last year, stays in Malaysian hands.
In petanque, national player Saiful Bahri Musmin made a triumphant return to the Sea Games after skipping the previous edition in Hanoi.
Saiful proved that he remains a force to be reckoned with at Asean level by winning the men's individual gold with a 13-9 win over Laos' Bountamy Southammavong in the final.
In Sihanoukville, sailor Hafizin Mansor flowed with the waves to the RSX gold. Despite a slow start on the first day, the Langkawi-born quickly found the wind in subsequent races and collected 10 points to top the standings, finishing ahead of Singapore's Jayson Jian Sen Tan (15 points) and Cambodia's Sem Brospov (21).
In badminton, it was another disastrous outing for the Malaysian women's team who failed to reach the semi-finals for a second straight time.
After losing 3-1 to hosts Vietnam last year, the Malaysian team suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat by the Philippines today.
