Sea Games: Hoe Yean splashes to 400m freestyle silver

PHNOM PENH: Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean saved Malaysia the blushes when he delivered a silver medal in the men's 400m freestyle at the Aquatic Centre in Morodok Techo National Stadium today.

The 20-year-old clocked 3:50.39 behind Vietnam's Nguyen Huy Hoang who took gold on 3:49.50. Singapore's Glen Lim settled for bronze with 3:53.78.

Hoe Yean had earlier captured the men's 200m freestyle gold, 4x100m freestyle silver, 200m backstroke bronze and 4x200m freestyle bronze.

"I'm glad that I've contributed to the Malaysian contingent, and I'm quite happy with the results," said Hoe Yean.

"Even though the timing is not that great, I managed to defend my title in the 200m freestyle (from Hanoi Sea Games last year).

"There's more to work on for the upcoming World Championships and Asian Games.

"We have strong opponents here like Vietnam's Huy Hoang who is very good in this event, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to swim against him," said Hoe Yean.

The World Championships will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, from July 14-30 while the Asian Games are scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China from Sept 23-Oct 8.
