Today at the Sea Games: Quiet day for contingent as medals slow to a trickle [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: National athletes were not able to add to the nation's gold medal haul at the Phnom Penh Sea Games today.

Malaysia was, however, able to claim its first medals from the traditional boat race event since the 1993 Singapore games after claiming silver in the men's 250 metre 12 crew and bronze in the women's 250m three crew categories.

In women's cycling, Nur Aishah Zubir was forced to settle for bronze this time in the mass start road race in which she had won silver last year.

Taekwondo exponent Luqman Haqim Mohd Suhaimi was forced to settle for bronze in the men's Under-87kg category after going down 2-1 to Philippines Samuel Thomas Morrison in his semi-final. Luqman had won the opening round of the bout.

Sebastian Tan also claimed bronze in the men's Under-54kg class.

In table tennis, Karen Lyne Dick-Choong Javen's hopes of reaching the final of the mixed doubles event were dashed after they were edged 13-11, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 12-10 by Vietnam's Anh Hoang Dinh-Mai Ngoc Tran in the quarterfinals.

On a more positive note, pool players Darryl Chia-Muhammad Almie Muhamad Yakup booked their spot in the doubles final after edging Thailand's seasoned cueists Preecha Boonmoung and Sompol Saetang 9-8 in the semi-finals today.

The men's hockey squad also booked an early spot in the final after drubbing Thailand 5-0 today. They occupy the top spot (nine points) in the round robin standings with one game remaining.
