Six karate exponents to fight for glory at Asian Games

MELAKA: The Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) has selected six Kumite exponents for the Hangzhou Asian Games from Sept 23-Oct 8.

The six are S. Prem Kumar (men's 55kg), Arif Afifuddin (84kg), H. Sankar Sureeya (60kg), R. Shamendran (under-75kg), C. Shahmalarani (women's under-50kg) and P. Madhuri (55kg).

In preparation for the Asian Games, the six will undergo training-cum-sparring sessions in Tunisia, Morocco and Europe.

Makaf president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the target is at least one gold medal.

"These exponents have about two months to fix their weaknesses for the Asian Games. The six athletes will undergo training and sparring in Morocco, Tunisia and another European country," said Azmi during the Asian Championships here today.

Meanwhile, Sureeya (60kg), Arif (84kg), K. Gnanasekaran (+84kg), M. Poovanesan (-55kg) and Amirah Syahirah Azalan (women's 68kg) all failed to deliver today at the Asian Championships.
