KUALA LUMPUR: The Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) is sad and concerned over former national champion Kenneth Low who has fallen on hard times due to poor health.
The 44-year-old Kenneth, who was the national No 1 from 1995 to 1997, is suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease of the central nervous system.
SRAM director Major (rtd) S. Maniam said the national association has been helping Kenneth after they became aware of his condition four months ago.
"SRAM president Gerard Monteiro made a contribution of RM20,000 to help Kenneth, and to pay for his medical treatment."
Gerard used to play against Kenneth in national-level tournaments in the 1980s.
"Even the players from the 1980s got together to give Kenneth a substantial amount of money four months ago.
"Former player Jeffery Kok is helping Kenneth in managing the money given to him by SRAM and the players from the 80s.
"He used to come to the SRAM office for financial assistance and for help in looking for a job. I have even helped him to look for jobs and also helped him financially.
"I have a soft spot for Kenneth, who was a good and hard working player during his days," said Maniam.
"It is unfortunate that he is suffering from nerve problems and has difficulty in balancing himself. It's called multiple sclerosis.
"Kenneth has problems working due to his medical condition. He was referred to Selayang Hospital but they only did a psychology test on him. He needs a neuro specialist.
"We will continue to help Kenneth and we have informed Yakeb (National Athletes' Welfare Foundation)," said Maniam.
Yakeb chairman Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majeed said they knew about Kenneth's plight more than a month ago.
"I have personally given some financial assistance to Kenneth, and we have given him a monthly allowance of RM300 since last month.
"He suffered a stroke two years ago and was admitted to Sungai Buloh hospital. We referred him to Selayang hospital."
Kenneth, who is divorced, had worked in various states as a coach and also as a cleaner at restaurants and apartments.
He is now working as a cleaner at an archery centre in Damansara. But due to his medical condition, he is unable to work for long hours.
