[UPDATED] Kenneth Jonassen named national singles badminton coach

KUALA LUMPUR: Kenneth Jonassen has been named the new national singles coach.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam confirmed the Dane's appointment during a press conference at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara today.

Jonassen, 50, joins BAM following an 11-year stint as the singles coach for Badminton Denmark.

"Jonassen will assume the new role on Jan 4, 2025, and will be on a four-year contract until 2028," said Subramaniam today.

"After an extensive search, we decided to hire Jonassen as he has a track record.

"He will report to national coaching director Rexy Mainaky. They will work hand-in-hand to achieve BAM's objective of winning an Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games."

Jonassen has led many Danish players to glory in international tournaments. His best achievement was guiding Viktor Axelsen to his first of two Olympic men's singles gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Among those who will go under Jonassen's charge when he starts at BAM are 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallist Ng Tze Yong and Kumamoto Masters runners-up Leong Jun Hao.
