KUALA LUMPUR: Johnathan Wong has qualified for next year's Paris Olympics after finishing fourth in the men's 10m air pistol individual final at the 15th Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon, South Korea, today.
The 31-year-old Melaka shooter scored 201.1 points in the Asian meet, which also served as an Olympic qualifier.
China's Jinyao Liu (222.6) and Zhang Yifan (222.5) won the gold and silver respectively. India's Sarabjot Singh was third (221.1).
In the qualifying round, Johnathan finished seventh (582 points) among 48 shooters. The top eight qualified for the final.
Johnathan, who featured in the 2016 Rio Olympics, said: "All my hard training has paid off. And I feel excited to qualify for my second Olympics."
At the recent Hangzhou Asian Games, he finished sixth in the 10m air pistol final.
National Shooting Association of Malaysia secretary Hayathi Shamsuri said they are happy Johnathan has qualified for the Olympics.
"He has been consistent with his performance in the Hangzhou Asian Games and also the Asian Championships.
"There are 10 national shooters taking part in the Asian Championships, and we hope Johnathan's good performance will motivate the others to also win a spot in the Olympics," said Hayathi.
The Malaysian shooters are Alia Sazana, Nur Suryani Mat Taibi, Harith Ikhlil Hessly Hafiz and Nurul Syasya Nadiah Ariffin.
