Rachel wins opening British Open match

KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 2 Rachel Arnold defeated Hong Kong's Tsz Wing Tong to reach the second round of the British Open in Birmingham on Sunday.

The world No. 28 Malaysian won 11-7, 4-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7 in 43 minutes. She will face fifth seed Nour El Tayeb of Egypt in the second round on Monday.

Compatriot Aifa Azman also reached the second round following an 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6 win over England's Torrie Malik.

Aifa will play No. 16 Fayrouz Aboelkheir of Egypt for a placing in the third round.

However, it was the end of the road for Aifa's sister Aira, who lost 11-8, 8-11, 13-11, 11-5 to Aboelkheir.
