Dhabitah gets Olympic slot, will join Rhodict in Paris

KUALA LUMPUR: National diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri is set to make her third appearance at the Olympics next month.

Malaysia Aquatics (MAS) diving technical director Bryan Nickson Lomas confirmed that World Aquatics (WA) have given Malaysia an unused quota slot for the Paris Games (Jul 26-Aug 11).

Only one Malaysian diver, Bertrand Rhodict Lises (men's 10m platform individual), had qualified on merit for the games.

"WA have given us one slot for the women's 3m springboard (individual) event," said Bryan today.

"Dhabitah will receive the slot and compete in this event for us in Paris.

"For now, she will continue her preparations for the games here in Kuala Lumpur, but could join Rhodict for an acclimatisation camp in the United Kingdom in the final two weeks before the Olympics.

"We have already proposed this (to National Sports Council) and if approved she will likely leave for the UK on July 9."

Rhodict is currently undergoing a training camp in Australia.

The versatile Dhabitah - adept at both springboard and platform diving - has been the standout women's diver for Malaysia in recent seasons.

She claimed a silver and a bronze at last year's Hangzhou Asian Games and claimed two silvers and a bronze at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Dhabitah and Pandelela Rinong also won a bronze (10m platform synchronised) at the 2022 Budapest World Championships.

Dhabitah, 24, made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016 and went on to compete at Tokyo 2020.

MAS have also received two universality slots for Paris - better known as wildcards - in swimming.

MAS is looking to send Khiew Hoe Yean and Tan Rouxin to compete in the men's 400m freestyle and women's 100m breaststroke respectively.

Their names have been submitted to the Olympic Council of Malaysia for the latter's approval.
