New dive too 'risky' for Rhodict in early rounds, says diving technical director

KUALA LUMPUR: National diver Bertrand Rhodict Lises will likely use only one of two new dives he has been practising over the past few months in the early rounds at the Paris Olympics.

National diving programme technical director Bryan Nickson Lomas says that Rhodict, who will be making his Olympic debut in Paris, is yet to be fully proficient in either dives.

Rhodict, 19, has been learning the new dives, which have a higher degree of difficulty (DD), to help boost his scores.

"Rhodict has been learning two new dives. He has done okay with the first dive though his execution is not yet perfect," said Bryan yesterday.

"But he is good enough to be able to use this first dive in the preliminaries as well as the semi-finals, if he qualifies.

"His success rate with the second dive, however, is still very low and it would be risky for him to use it in the early rounds. His execution for this dive has yet to score seven or eight points.

"He could, however, use it (second dive) if he reaches the final. He might as well go all out at that stage as there is nothing to lose."

Rhodict will compete in the men's 10 metre platform individual event which starts with the preliminaries on Aug 9 followed by the semi-finals and final a day later.

The Sarawakian is the only Malaysian diver to have qualified on merit for the Paris Olympics. He achieved qualification by reaching the final at the Fukuoka World Championships last year.
