Olympics-bound swimmer Rou Xin breaks national record

KUALA LUMPUR: Paris-bound Tan Rou Xin proved she is worthy of her Olympic wild card after breaking the national 200m individual medley record at the first Malaysia Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships at the National Aquatics Centre on Thursday.

Rou Xin, representing Ezy Swimming Club, clocked 2:16.67 seconds, breaking the national record of 2:22.21 set by Alicia Li in 2021.

Yoong Jia Jia of Pade-Supersharkz Swimming Club finished second with 2:21.45 and teammate Kelly Teo completed the podium with 2:21.82.

"I feel very happy breaking the national record. But I must admit that it is a little unexpected for me," said Rou Xin, who will turn 18 on Saturday.

The Johorean will make her Olympic debut in Paris after being selected along with Khiew Hoe Yean to receive a wild card.

More national records fell at the National Aquatics Centre with Megan Ho breaking Yap Siew Hui's 11-year-old mark in the 50m butterfly.

Siew Hui's record of 27.95 was smashed by Megan who posted 27.55.

Wong Shi Qi finished second with 27.87 and Lim Shun Qi was third with 28.54.

On the men's side, Jayden Tan broke Lim Ching Hwang's 12-year-old 200m individual medley record.

Jayden set a time of 2:00.73s to best Ching Hwang's 2:03.11 while Lim Yin Chuen finished second by posting 2:02.46 and Terence Ng finished third, recording 2:03.89.

Chong Xin Lin also did not want to miss out on the record-breaking day, and duly swam 27.56 in the 50m backstroke, breaking Caroline Chan's seven-year-old record of 29.18.

Megan Ho finished second (29.70) and Kelly Teo finished third (30.42).
