Quiet start for Malaysian bowlers in Incheon

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia had a quiet start at the World Youth Championships in Incheon, South Korea, as none of their eight members reached the medal rounds of the singles event.

Nur Hazirah Ramli, Adelia Nur Irwan Syazalee and Adania Mohd Redzwan were all eliminated in the last-16 matchplay stage at the Fiesta Bowling Centre yesterday.

Adania finished last in the eight-player Group A. Hazirah and Adelia had to settle for seventh and eighth in Group B.

The top two finishers in each group advanced to the medal playoffs. The qualifiers from Group A were Peru's Yumi Yuzuriha Seragaki and American Annalise O'Bryant while Finland's Stealla Lokfors and Arianne Tay made it out of Group B.

In the six-game roll-off on Wednesday, Adania finished fourth, with Hazirah and Adelia in 11th and 14th respectively. Anis Hannani Romzi could only manage 44th place.

None of the Malaysian boys' quartet made it past the qualifying stage, with Ahmad Azriq Izamudin being the best finisher in 25th. Hariz Adlan Azman, Izz Naqiuddin Putera and Megat Zaqrul Haiqal finished 29th, 32nd and 68th respectively.

Finishing empty-handed in the singles events is disappointing for Malaysia, especially considering they started the 2022 edition in Helsingborg, Sweden, with two silver, won by Ahmad Azriq and Alyaa Addini.
