Jae Hyung tells Malaysian archers to refocus

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's women's recurve archers should not lose hope at the Paris Olympics despite disappointment in the team event.

Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi, Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil and Syaqiera Mashayikh lost 5-3 to Indonesia in the women's 1/8 elimination round at the Esplanade des Invalides yesterday.

Their South Korean coach, Lee Jae Hyung said they can shoot, but lack finishing.

"They should not give up and they need to bounce back to give their best in the individual event. They need to be much better in handling the composure of body and mind.

"They had shown improvement since the ranking round (on July 25) and gave a good fight to Indonesia.

"The trio only have one day to recover from the team event before they compete in the individual event.

"Syaqiera showed progress in the ranking round and did a personal best. I'm certain that she will be more determined to do much better in the individual event.

"Ariana and Nurul Azreena were not up to the mark in the ranking round, and they need to control their emotions."

Syaqiera shot 663 to finish 14th among 64 archers in the ranking round. She faces Moldova's Alexandra Mirca, who finished 32nd, in the first round tomorrow. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Syaqiera lost in the first round to Russian Osipova.

Ariana scored 633 and Nurul Azreena, 622, to finish 50th and 60th in the ranking round respectively.

Ariana will face Italy's Chiara Rebagliati, ranked 15th, while Nurul Azreena will face fifth-ranked Elif Berra Gokkir of Türkiye on Wednesday.
