KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's medal hopes were boosted at the Paris Olympics today as yet another badminton pair secured their spot in the quarterfinals.
Women's doubles duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah (world No. 13) upset higher ranked Indonesia pair Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti (world No. 9) 21-18, 21-9 to book their place in the last-eight.
Pearly-Thinaah needed to win the match and hope that China's top seeded pair Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi beat Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara (Japan) to advance to the knockout stage as group A runners-up.
Qing Chen-Jia Yi did just that, downing Mayu-Wakana 21-16, 21-15.
Malaysian shuttlers have now qualified for the quarterfinals in three different categories as Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (men's doubles) and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles) booked their slots yesterday.
Meanwhile in archery, Syaqiera Mashayikh did well to beat her opening round opponent Alexandra Mirca (Moldova) 6-0 but was edged 6-5 in the second round by Brazil's Ana Sliachticas.
Arianna Nur Dania Zairi and Nurul Azreena Fazil will play their first-round matches tomorrow.
