Debutant Joachim saves match points to snatch Sukma squash crown

KUCHING: Joachim Chuah secured the Malaysia Games (Sukma) men's singles squash gold medal after a hard-fought victory over C. Ameeshenraj at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching today.

Joachim, representing the Federal Territories, edged Negri Sembilan's Ameeshenraj 11-4, 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 13-11 in the final.

Ameeshenraj was on the verge of claiming the title when he led 10-8 in the fifth and deciding game.

However, Joachim kept his cool, clawing back to 10-10 before sealing victory.

"It was an amazing match. I was down 2-1 and almost lost in the fourth and fifth games.

"However, I managed to come back and win. I didn't have high hopes here. I just wanted to do my best. However, I'm happy to have won the gold," said Joachim.

It is the FT's first gold medal in the men's singles since Ng Eain Yow's victory at the 2018 Perak edition.

The bronze medal was won by Perak's Low Wa Sern, who defeated Amir Amirul Azhar from Kelantan 11-4, 11-8, 12-10.

Meanwhile, Joachim said he would now focus on the men's doubles event with Sam Yong.

"Of course, we are aiming to win gold in the doubles, but we can't be too confident as I expect the competition to be tough," he added.
