Sukma 2024: Chess makes its debut as athletes chase 48 gold medals tomorrow

KUCHING: A total of 48 gold medals will be at stake tomorrow, including two in chess as the sports makes its Malaysia Games (Sukma) debut in this edition.

The two chess gold medals will be on offer in the men's and women's individual rapid events that will be held at Dewan Jubli Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Kota Samarahan.

Meanwhile, the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre will see 11 gold medals up for grabs, with eight in swimming and three in diving.

The Sarawak Stadium will be just as busy as the athletics competition enters its third day with eight golds at stake.

Over at Mukah Campus of the UiTM Balau Hall in Mukah, about 240 kilometres (km) from here, judo exponents will be vying for seven gold medals while three gold medals will be in the offing over at the Stephen Kalong Ningkan Hall in Betong for weightlifting.

Basketball 5x5, squash, artistic gymnastics, fencing, shooting and archery will offer two gold medals each while table tennis will have one gold medal at stake.

As for the mountain bike (MTB) competition at the Kuching Utara City Council's Bukit Siol grounds in Petra Jaya here, the riders will be fighting it out for four gold medals.

Sukma, which officially began on Aug 17, ends on Saturday (Aug 24).– BERNAMA
