SUKMA 2024: Sibling chemistry powers divers Sharzan- Nursharzyra to gold

KUCHING: Sibling chemistry was in full flow, carrying Sarawak divers, Awang Sharzan Nasrin Awang Nasaruddin and Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin, to victory at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in the 3m mix synchronised springboard event today.

Sharzan-Nursharzyra posted a total score of 227.13 points for gold, while the Federal Territories' (FT) Choo Jin Wei- Celeste Qin Lee won silver (209.04), Terengganu's Haziq Muizzudin Asri-Uzlifatil Jannah Ashraf (201.81) completed the podium at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre.

Six teams of two divers, one from each gender, participated in the event.

Sharzan felt jubilant in finally winning a gold. "This is my third Sukma, and I came up empty-handed each time, yesterday, in the 3m springboard, I was disappointed to finish fifth.

"So I'm grateful to have contributed a medal for Sarawak in this event," the 19-year-old said.

Nursharzyra, who joined the national backup squad in March, said diving in the synchro event with her brother make things easier due to their siblings chemistry.

"Synchro diving is not easy, but it becomes easier if you have the chemistry with your brother. We get each other because we are on the same wavelength.

"If I tell him I can't jump too high, he will understand and do his best to accommodate me and vice versa," said the 17-year-old.

Nursharzyra did a double gold act today, as 30 minutes after the mixed synchronised event, she returned to the pool for the women's 1m springboard, and emerged triumphant too.

Nursharzyra earned 232.10 points for gold while Uzlifatil Jannah (186.60) was second. FT's Teng Hui Xue (173.15) was third.
