KUCHING: Sea Games champion Umar Osman dominated the men's 800m event, breaking one of the longest-standing records in Malaysia Games (Sukma) history at Sarawak Stadium here today.
The 21-year-old clocked 1:51.19s, smashing the 32-year-old record previously held by G. Ampumani, who ran 1:52.35 at the 1992 Sukma in Johor.
Federal Territories' P. Risheraam took silver with a time of 1:55.31, while Pahang's S. Sri Murugan finished third in 1:55.46.
It is Umar's third Games record, having also set new benchmarks in his main event, the 400m (46.78), and the 4x400m relay (3:12.35) here.
Umar is also the national 400m record holder (46.09).
He also won the gold medal in the same event in last year's Phnom Penh Sea Games.
In the women's 800m, Johor's S. Geetha won with a time of 2:20.41, followed by Kelantan's Nor Ainaa Balqis Hashim (2:22.21) and Sabah's Hizillawanty Jamain (2:22.54).
