KUCHING: Johor retained their title as overall champions in track and field at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) here, securing nine gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
The state outperformed their closest rivals, Selangor, who had to settle for second place with eight gold, five silver and four bronze medals, while the Federal Territories came in third with a haul of 6-5-4.
At the 2022 edition in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, known as the Harimau Selatan team, won nine golds.
On the final day of competition at Sarawak Stadium today, Johor added two more gold medals through Umar Osman and S. Geetha, who each topped the men's and women's 800m events.
Johor athletics coordinator S. Ananda Raja said this achievement exceeded the official target of five gold medals.
He noted that what was even more impressive was Umar, who broke Sukma records in the 400m, 800m and 4x400m relay events.
Umar also won a fourth title in the mixed 4x400m relay, emerging as the most successful athlete in track and field here.
"We brought 31 athletes here, 24 of whom are still eligible for the 2026 Sukma in Selangor. It is crucial because we want to ensure continuity from this success.
"As soon as we complete the post-mortem to identify areas for improvement, we will immediately begin preparations for the next Sukma.
"There will undoubtedly be pressure to defend the championship, but with thorough preparation, I believe we can achieve it," said Ananda.
Although the 800m is not his favourite event, Umar excelled by breaking the 32-year-old record by clocking 1:51.19s.
He surpassed the previous record of 1:52.35s, set by G. Ampumani during the 1992 Johor edition.
Earlier, he also set new records in his main event, the 400m with a time of 46.78s, and the 4x400m relay with 3:12.35s.
Umar holds the national record for the 400m with a time of 46.09s.
"I am very grateful that I was able to help Johor win four gold medals and break three Games records.
"I am satisfied with my performance, and I gave it my all to help Johor secure the top spot," said Umar.
