Sukma 2024: Weightlifter Siti Aqilah breaks two national records

BETONG: Terengganu weightlifter Siti Aqilah Farhana Draman set two new national records en route to winning the Malaysia Games (Sukma) women's over 76-kilogramme gold medal yesterday.

The 18-year-old's 100kg (snatch) and 226kg (total lift) erased the old national marks of 95kg and 225kg set by national weightlifter Sonia Cassendra Masne at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships in Jasin, Melaka in 2021.

Siti Aqilah Farhana then lifted 126kg in the clean and jerk but failed to better the national record of 130kg, also held by Sonia.

"In the previous edition, I only got silver but, this time, I managed to get the gold medal. I want to thank my parents and coaches who have done so much to help me get the gold today," she said after the medal presentation ceremony.

Kedah's Nur Alya Nabilah Ahmad Nazri (181kg) took silver while Sarawak's Brickleen Jessie Hiew (160kg) settled for bronze.

Meanwhile, in the women's 76kg category, Selangor's Nur Ellyana Maisarah Norazman lifted a total of 166kg (snatch 75kg, clean & jerk 91 kg) for the gold medal while Kelantan's Nur Nabila Najwa Halim (snatch 70kg, clean & jerk 80kg; total 150kg) took silver and Pahang's Nur Izzati Insyirah Rahim (55kg, 68kg; 123kg) the bronze.
