Powerlifter Bonnie gunning for gold and world record in Paris

KUALA LUMPUR: Powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin is determined to secure Malaysia's second gold medal at the Paris Paralympics in style tomorrow.

In addition to chasing his second consecutive Paralympic gold, Bonnie aims to break his own world record of 231kg, which he set at the World Cup Championships in Dubai last year.

Bonnie's coach, Jamil Adam, confirmed that the 24-year-old Sarawakian is in peak condition ahead of his competition at La Chapelle Arena.

"He's fully charged and ready after undergoing intense training for the Paris Paralympics," said Jamil.

"All he needs to do now is stick to the game plan we've prepared."

Jamil added that while breaking the world record is a goal, Bonnie's priority is to retain his gold medal.

"He's definitely aiming for the record, but the main target is defending the title."

At Tokyo 2020, Bonnie clinched gold with a lift of 228kg, setting a new Paralympic record.
