Group stage win continues to elude Bunga Raya Sevens squad

KUALA LUMPUR: The national men's rugby squad will be playing in the classification rounds tomorrow after struggling to make an impact in the group stage of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series in Hangzhou today (Sept 21).

The Bunga Raya Sevens squad lost their opening pool B match against Japan 40-12 before suffering a 35-0 defeat at the hands of hosts China.

They fared slightly better against the United Arab Emirates but were still dealt a 22-7 defeat.

Japan topped the group after beating UAE 29-14 and edging China 21-19.

As expected, Hong Kong topped pool A after beating South Korea (27-0), Singapore (41-0) and Thailand (45-0).

Hong Kong had beaten China in the final of the opening round of the Asia Seven Series which was held in South Korea earlier this month. Malaysia finished sixth from eight teams in the opening round.

The women's competition today witnessed Malaysia notching a solitary win in their final pool D match against UAE (17-5). The women's squad had lost their earlier matches against Japan (60-0) and Hong Kong (29-5).

Japan topped pool D after notching comfortable wins over Hong Kong (48-0) and UAE (48-0). China topped pool C after beating Thailand (31-5), Kazakhstan (35-5) and Singapore (51-0).
