Terengganu expect 'epic' rugby clash with Police as Agong's Cup enters business end

KUALA LUMPUR: After five weeks of hard-hitting action, the Agong's Cup rugby competition is now down to only four teams.

The semi-final lineups were confirmed today - defending champions Police will face-off against 2019 winners Terengganu in a match worthy of a final while Selangor are to face Johor for a spot in the decider.

Both semi-final matches will be played at UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam on Oct 19.

The last quarterfinal match today saw Selangor downing Kuala Lumpur 38-22 in Sungai Buloh to advance to the final-four.

In the other quarterfinals yesterday, Police downed Perlis 29-10 (Pulapol KL), Johor beat Perak 30-10 (Skudai) while Terengganu defeated Armed Forces 39-29 (Kuala Terengganu).

Terengganu coach Khairul Azhar Shaarani is expecting a bruising encounter when they lock horns with Police in the semi-finals.

"We are grateful to be able to secure the win against Armed Forces in what was our first match on home ground this season," said Khairul yesterday.

"We are expecting another epic encounter with Police, especially after we narrowly lost to them in the quarterfinals last year.

"We anticipated this match and we are better prepared this time. It will be an honour to play them again."

Terengganu, who reached the final in 2022, lost 20-17 to Police in the last-eight last year.

Police are four-time winners of the nation's most prestigious inter-state rugby 15s competition having previously won it in 2023, 1991, 1985 and 1983.
