Sivasangari falls in Silicon Valley Open semis

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian champion S. Sivasangari went down fighting to world No. 4 Olivia Weaver in five sets in the semi-finals of the Silicon Valley Open in Redwood City in California yesterday.

The World No. 9 and third seeded Malaysian battled for 68 minutes and gave the top seeded American some anxious moments.

But Weaver, who has been playing consistently well in PSA tournaments, prevailed 11-6, 8-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-5.

It was Sivasangari's second defeat to Weaver this year. She lost in four sets to the American in the second round of Paris Squash last month.

National chief coach Ajaz Azmat said Sivasangari played well overall against Weaver compared to her quarter-final match against Egypt's world No. 24 Zeina Mickawy where she struggled before winning in five sets.

Sivasangari will return to Cornell, the United States, to continue training under David Palmer before the US Open in Philadelphia from Oct 19-26.
