KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian men's and women's teams were unbeatable in the World Squash Championships at the Hong Kong Football Club on Tuesday.
They won all their matches to reach the last 16.
The fifth seeded Malaysian men's team, led by world No. 13 Ng Eain Yow, beat Scotland 2-1 in the morning and the Philippines 3-0 in the evening to top Group E.
Eain Yow and Co will meet Asian champions India for a place in the quarter-finals. India beat Malaysia 2-0 in the Hangzhou Asian Games in October.
In the men's event, the United States-based Sanjay Jeeva came back from the brink of defeat to beat Scotland's Rory Stewart 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-2.
Asian champion Eain Yow also came back from two sets down to overcome Greg Lobban 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5, but Addeen Idrakie lost the third tie, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, to Alasdair Prott.
Against the Philippines, Sanjay beat Christopher Buraga 11-8, 12-10, 11-5; Eain Yow beat Reymark Begornia 11-7, 11-4, 11-3 and Syafiq Kamal beat Jonathan Reyes 11-5. 11-4, 11-7.
The Malaysian women's team, spearheaded by world No. 10 S. Sivasangari, outclassed Macau 3-0 a day earlier. On Tuesday, they downed France 3-0 and Ireland 3-0 to top Group E.
Asian champion Sivasangari beat France's Mellisa Alves 11-8, 11-7, 10-12, 11-4; China Open champion Rachel Arnold beat Marie Stephan 14-12, 11-5, 11-0 and two-time national champion Aira Azman beat Enora Villard 11-7, 12-10, 11-9.
Against Ireland, Rachel beat Breanne Flynn 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7; Sivasingari beat Hannah Craig 11-2, 11-4, 11-9 and
Aifa Azman beat Ciara Moloney 11-2, 11-1, 11-1.
The Malaysian women's team, who are Asian champions, will meet Japan in the last 16.
National coach Andrew Cross said while the men's team face a daunting match against India, the women have a good draw and should beat Japan to reach the quarter-finals.
