KUALA LUMPUR: The S. Sivasangari-led Malaysian women's team pulled off the biggest upset of the World Team Squash Championships by defeating third seeds England to book a spot in the semi-finals in Hong Kong today.
World No. 10 Sivasangari delivered the winning point for fifth seeds Malaysia, overcoming world No. 19 Sarah-Jane Perry 4-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 in 40 minutes.
The victory marked a strong comeback for Sivasangari, who had suffered a setback in the last 16 against Japan's Satomi Watanabe on Wednesday.
Earlier, two-time national champion Aira Azman gave Malaysia a crucial lead with a hard-fought 4-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-6 win over world No. 33 Lucy Beecroft in 39 minutes.
Malaysia, who shared third place with England in the 2022 Egypt edition, will likely face the United States in the semi-finals tomorrow.
Aira, 20, expressed her delight at setting the tone for Malaysia's stunning victory over England.
"I was actually prepared to play world No. 22 Lucy Turmel in the opening tie, but England fielded Beecroft instead," said Aira.
"I played against Beecroft at the Switzerland Open last year and lost in five games.
"I felt tense in the first game today and initially used the wrong strategy. Luckily, I managed to adapt and win the following games.
"I'm very happy to deliver the first point against England. This win feels amazing and will definitely boost our confidence heading into the semi-finals tomorrow."
National coach Andrew Cross lauded both Aira and Sivasangari for their resilience in their respective matches.
"Despite losing their opening games, they remained undeterred and fought back to claim crucial victories," said Cross.
