Jakarta police fire water cannon to disperse crowd

POLICE dispersed a crowd by firing a water cannon outside a shopping area in Central Jakarta here on Tuesday.

The action taken asserts the measures the police will take to uphold regulations during the emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM), the Antara News agency reported.

During the enforcement of the PPKM, police officers are to take firm action to stop activities that can potentially become a source of transmission for Covid-19.

Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police Senior Commissioner chief Hengki Haryadi said they resorted to the firm step after warnings were ignored by the crowd.

"We had several times called on the crowds to disperse, but they did not," he said. The action taken to disperse was caught on video and gone viral on social media.

The PPKM, launched on July 3, will last until July 20.
