12 hurt in Central Java quake

JAKARTA: At least 12 people were injured and 49 houses, along with 11 public facilities, were affected following a magnitude-4.4 earthquake that struck the districts of Batang, Pekalongan and Kendal in Central Java on Sunday.

The earthquake's epicentre was on land about 5km northeast of Batang, occurring at 2.35 pm local time at a depth of 6 km, which prompted residents to evacuate their homes in a panic.

According to National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhairi, 11 residents required intensive care and have since returned home, while one resident remains under health observation.

The earthquake also damaged five houses severely, 12 houses moderately, and 32 houses lightly, while a place of worship, three schools, a market, and another building were also damaged.

"Authorities, including the military and police, are helping residents clear the debris from collapsed buildings and have issued warnings for potential aftershocks," he said in a statement Monday.

The Batang Social Service Department has established a communal kitchen for residents, while the Central Java Health Office has sent teams, including volunteers, to provide healthcare services
