KUALA LUMPUR: A Singaporean, who is wanted by police after failing to appear in a drug-related court case in the republic seven years ago, was arrested in Malaysia.
Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) acting director Senior Assistant Commissioner Leon Chan said the Malaysian police's Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) arrested the 37-year-old man on Oct 1 for criminal and immigration offences.
He was subsequently deported to Singapore on Oct 20, and arrested by the CNB on the same day.
Chan expressed his appreciation to the Malaysian police's NCID for the repatriation of its citizen, who had failed to appear in court for his drug trafficking case in 2017.
"CNB would like to thank NCID and Royal Malaysia Police for their strong support in rendering assistance to CNB for this case.
"Drug traffickers thinking to evade our law by hiding overseas will find that there is no safe haven.
"The close cooperation between CNB and NCID/Royal Malaysia Police and the eventual arrest of the man in this operation is testament to the strong working relationship that CNB has with them," he said, while thanking his Malaysian counterparts in a statement on the CNB's Facebook.
The statement said the 37-year-old was wanted in connection with several cases of drug trafficking and other drug-related offences committed between 2014 and this year. The man also has two additional investigations for voluntarily causing grievous hurt and cheating by impersonation in the republic.
"The man was first arrested and charged in court on April 3, 2014 with three counts of drug trafficking and one count of drug consumption.
"He was then released on bail by the court. He failed to attend court on June 12, 2017 and an arrest warrant was issued against him," it said, adding the man would be brought to court to face the original 2014 drug charges.
