KUALA LUMPUR: A British tourist was caught on camera screaming and slapping an immigration officer at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport on Saturday after being told that she had to pay a hefty fine for overstaying.
"The person in this case overstayed, exceeding her immigration permit in Indonesia," Immigration spokesperson Agung Sampurno told Detik.
After this was discovered by immigration officers, Auj-e Taqaddas was taken to an office at the airport.
"From the beginning, when we detected that she had overstayed, she was already emotional with (the officer)," said Sampurno, Coconuts Bali reported.
She was then told that foreigners are required to pay US$25 per day if they overstay.
Having been in the country illegally for 160 days, this meant that the tourist needed to pay US$4,000.
Enraged by the hefty fine, the 42-year-old began cussing at the officer.
When he tried to take her passport back, the woman slapped him in the face.
Immigration Chief Ngurah Rai Aris Amran said: "She slapped the officer, who is a respected guard. She touched immigration, which means touching representatives of the nation. So we reported it to the police," Metro reported.
"She pretended not to know that she had overstayed. But people who visit a country to travel know they have a period of stay, and she had overstayed since February," said Aris.
According to Coconuts Bali, the woman has been detained.
"Now the woman concerned cannot be dispatched, cannot go home, because the violation must be processed first, in the form of payment of fines," said Sampurno.
