Langkawi Pas chief appointed Kedah state assembly speaker

ALOR STAR: Langkawi Pas division chief Zubir Ahmad, 60, has been appointed as the 15th Kedah state legislative assembly speaker after he emerged as the sole candidate nominated to fill up the post.

The former Pas candidate for the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the 14th general election held in 2018 lost to former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor nominated Zubir as the sole candidate of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, when the state assembly convened its first meeting earlier today after the 15th state election held on Aug 12.

Zubir's nomination was supported by state executive councillor Datuk Siti Ashah Ghazali (PN-Merbau Pulas).

State assembly secretary Mohamad Azlee Ahmad subsequently announced Zubir as the new speaker after his nomination was unanimously agreed on by the elected representatives.

In the August state election, PN won Kedah by a landslide majority after winning 33 out of the 36 state seats up for grabs.

The session proceeded with all the 36 elected representatives taking turns to pledge their oath of loyalty to the Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, the state and country.
