Kedah's three points go to 'paying penalty'

KUALA LUMPUR: Some fans hadn't even got to their seats when Kedah striker Syafiq Ahmad penetrated the Police defence.

It took Syafiq only 33 seconds to find the Cops' net in their Super League opener at the Selayang Stadium yesterday.

That was great scoring scoring instincts from Syafiq, an on loan striker from Johor Darul Ta'zim.

Yet Syafiq's strike was not a record. The fastest league goal was scored by Penang's centre-back Rafael Vitor, in nine seconds, in their 5-3 win over Perak in Ipoh on Aug 3, 2021.

Despite the electrifying start, no other goals flowed from Kedah on a water-logged pitch due to heavy rain almost throughout the match.

For Kedah, the win was only enough to "cover" the three-point deduction from them by the Football League (MFL) for the delay in paying salaries to their players last season.

Kedah coach Nafuzi Zain said: "We got the three points to pay the 'debt'. We will now focus on winning other matches."
