Undang Luak Rembau dies at 82

KUALA LUMPUR: Undang Luak Rembau Datuk Lela Maharaja Datuk Muhamad Sharip Othman, 82, died this morning.

It is understood that he passed away at his official residence in Rembau at around 9.15 am.

"We regret to inform you that Datuk Lela Maharaja Datuk Muhamad Sharip Othman, Undang Luak Rembau, has returned to the mercy of Allah.

"The body is now at the Official Residence of Undang Luak Rembau in Rembau," said a spokesperson from the Official Residence of Undang Luak Rembau in a statement today.

Prayers will be held at the the surau of the official residence before burial at the Kampung Mungkal Sepri Islamic Cemetery after Asar prayers.

"Visits for dignitaries are allowed after Zohor prayers," the spokesperson said.

The institution of "Undang" in the administrative system of Negri Sembilan is one of the unique features of this state.

An Undang is the head of a "luak" or administrative district in terms of custom, which is divided into four main districts: Rembau, Sungai Ujung, Johol, and Jelebu.

Muhamad Sharip was appointed as Undang Luak Rembau in 1998.
