Rainforest World Music Festival sold 35pc more tickets than last year

KUCHING: The Rainforest World Music Festival sold 35 per cent more tickets this year, the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) said.

It said more than 26,000 festival-goers from across the globe had gathered at the Sarawak Cultural Village at the foot of Mount Santubong from last Friday to Sunday to experience the magic of the festival.

The board declared the 27th edition of the festival a "resounding success" as Sarawak recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year's edition was themed 'Evolution', encapsulating the festival's commitment to transcending beyond music, promoting responsible tourism, cultural exchange and environmental stewardship.

The festival featured 72 international and 75 local musicians, wowing the crowd with 22 performances.

STB said the artistes had a combined total of 12 million followers.

"(They) delivered unforgettable performances that resonated deeply with audiences," STB said.

The biggest draws were Japanese electronic-instrumental music maestro and Grammy award winner Kitaro and Malaysia's own music sensation Datuk Zainalabidin.

The festival was capped by the reggae beats of Havana Social Club.

STB said the 'Green Ruai' at the Sarawak Cultural Village exemplified the festival's commitment to sustainability.

The area showcased innovations in sustainable practices through partnership with key parties like Sarawak Energy, Eco Green Planet and Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

STB said the festival also featured eco-stations for recycling, more water stations to reduce single-use plastic bottles and shuttle buses to reduce carbon emissions.

"The RWMF 2024 has not only solidified its position as a premier global music event, but has also reinforced its role as a leader in promoting sustainability and cultural exchange."

Next year's festival will be held from June 20 to 22.
