KUALA LUMPUR: Sepang International Circuit (SIC) are likely to make a big announcement with regards to two wheel racing sometime early next week.
SIC chief executive officer, Datuk Razlan Razali was forced to miss SIC's Le Mans team announcement and breaking fast event with underprivileged children in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to attend an urgent meeting with MotoGP rights holder Dorna in Mugello, Italy.
SIC’s chief commercial officer, Sharmila Nadarajah indicated it will be a historic moment in Malaysian motorsports.
"Datuk Razlan is in Mugello now, he has a meeting with Dorna. I can’t say much now, we have to wait until he comes back, hopefully there will be an exciting announcement," said Sharmila, when met at the Le Mans cum breaking fast event last night.
"SIC, in a way, are creating history all around in both two and four wheeled motorsports, and now people know that we have the talent to race on a bigger, global platform."
Jazeman Jaafar, Weiron Tan and Nabil Jeffri will create history as the first ever all-Malaysian driver line-up to race in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race on June 16-17.
Razlan was also tight lipped when questioned on the meeting with Dorna, who are also rights holders for the Superbike World Championship as well as the Supercross GP World Championship.
"We are discussing something major, hopefully it will happen. I can't give any details for now, as it would be dangerous for me to do so," said Razlan, when contacted via text message.
Meanwhile, Sharmila confirmed that there are no plans to bring Formula One racing back to Malaysia for the time being.
"We will definitely announce it as soon as we have any news on it (F1), but for the moment there is none," added Sharmila.
Talk of F1 making a comeback surfaced after Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's return as Prime Minister recently. The Sepang Circuit is his brainchild and was intended to put Malaysia on the world map in the sport as well as boost the country’s tourism industry.
