First phase of Klang third bridge to be completed in July 2016

KLANG: Works of the first phase of the long delayed Klang third bridge which links Jalan Sungai Bertih, Jalan Tanjung Shawal and Jalan Goh Hock Huat is expected to be complete in July next year.

Selangor Public Accounts Committee (PAC) acting chairman Ng Suee Lim said about 30 per cent of the construction works have been completed costing RM199 million.

"Some of the 30 per cent of the works are the piling works and the foundation beam of the structure. We believe after the construction of the bridge it is expected to reduce the congestion from the two main bridges in Klang by at least 60 per cent.

"The bridge can accommodate about 120,000 vehicles in a day. Motorists travelling from Port Klang, Banting and Sijangkang will be able to avoid the traffic congestion once it is complete," he said after a closed door meeting with the Public Works Department (JKR), here, today.

Ng said the second phase of the bridge is expected to start next year, once JKR has completed their preliminary work in gathering information on traffic impact study, land acquisition, and land survey.

"The cost for the second phase is about RM320 million and if all goes well we will begin next year with the construction works. We expect that it will be complete in 2018.”

The 2.5km bridge including connecting roads were first proposed by the Barisan Nasional state government and launched on March 5th, 2008 by former Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, however, the project did not take off after Pakatan took over the state government later in the same month.
