Clean up clogged drain

A resident of Taman Bestari Indah in Ulu Tiram, Johor Baru, has urged the authorities to clear a clogged monsoon drain in Jalan Bestari 34/3.

Aaron Wasu claimed that litter bugs indiscriminately dumped uncollected rubbish into the waterway.

He posted photos of rubbish trapped in the shallow waters.

He said he lodged a complaint with the Johor Baru City Council via its Public Complaints Management System portal, urging the authorities to clean up the drain.

“The clogged rubbish disrupts water flow.

“I lodged a complaint earlier this month, but no action has been taken to clear the rubbish.

“Bulky waste, such as furniture, construction materials and tree trunks, is trapped and disrupts water flow as such items could not be swept away by the shallow waters.

“Over time, they will clog up the entire monsoon drain,” Wasu said, adding that heavy rain might cause floods if the rubbish was not cleared to enable smooth flow of drain water.

ACTIONLINE:

Johor Baru mayor Amran A. Rahman said the council had received a complaint from Aaron Wasu via the Public Complaints Bureau complaints portal, which is integrated with the council’s public complaints database.

He said a check was promptly carried out at the site and that the maintenance of the monsoon drain was under the jurisdiction of the developer of Taman Bestari Indah.

“The council’s Engineering Department issued a notice on Feb 22, instructing the developer to carry out immediate cleaning works at the monsoon drain and to remove uncollected rubbish to prevent blockage along the waterways within the next 14-day work period.”
