Malakoff's chairman, managing director resign

KUALA LUMPUR: Malakoff Corporation Bhd has announced changes in its top management following the resignation of its chairman and managing director.

Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid has resigned as managing director of the independent water and power producer, citing personal and professional reasons.

Malakoff chairman Tan Sri Syed Zainol Anwar Ibni Syed Putra Jamalullail, meanwhile, resigned as chairman of the company due to other professional commitment.

The company announced the appointment of Datuk Hasni Harun as its new chairman today, while Habib Husin has been appointed acting chief executive officer.

Hasni, 60, previously held several senior positions in the Accountant General’s Office from 1980 to 1994. He was also the senior general manager of the Investment Department at the Employees Provident Fund Board from 1994 to 2001 and the managing director of RHB Asset Management Sdn Bhd from 2001 until 2006.

He then joined DRB-HICOM Bhd as group chief financial officer until December 2006. In January 2007, he joined MMC Corporation Bhd as the group chief operating officer.

In March 2008, he was appointed the chief executive officer Malaysia, prior to his appointment as the group managing director of MMC in May 2010 until June 2013.

He is currently the chairman of Gas Malaysia Bhd and a director of Permodalan Felcra Sdn Bhd.

Habib, 57, was the operations executive vice president, since August 3, 2015, chief operating officer of Malakoff from October 2010 till August 2015 and a senior vice president, Asset Management Division of Malakoff, from April 2006 till October 2010.

He has a Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Electrical and Electronics) from University of Wales, United Kingdom. He had completed a Harvard Senior Management Development Programme in Malaysia in August 2004, Harvard Finance Programme in April 2005, and Advanced Management Programme in June 2009 at Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA.

Azhar, 56, was appointed group managing director on May 1, 2016. He began his career in the United Kingdom where he served British Telecom Plc as an Internal Auditor Manager from 1989 to 1991.

He later joined Malaysian Co-Operative Insurance Society Ltd as Head of Internal Audit and later as Head of Finance prior to joining Sime Darby Group in 1994.

Previously, Azhar was the chief executive officer of Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd from 2011 till 2014.

Syed Zainol Anwar commenced his career with Malaysia Airlines Systems Bhd in 1975 as a financial accountant, before moving on to hold senior positions in various companies.

His last position was as the group managing director of Amanah Capital Partners Bhd. He was also the former chairman of Lembaga Tabung Haji Investment Panel.

He was the former chairman of Media Prima Bhd, Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd, DRB-Hicom Bhd, EON Bank Bhd, Uni Asia Life Assurance Bhd, Uni Asia General Insurance Bhd and Radicare (M) Sdn Bhd. He was also an independent director of Maxis Communications Bhd and Bangkok Bank Bhd.

Currently, Syed Zainol is chairman of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, Nestle (Malaysia) Bhd, Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd and Lembaga Zakat Selangor. He is also the Chancellor of SEGi University.
