KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has installed one million smart meters in Melaka and the Klang Valley, with more to come in 2021.
TNB said the announcement marks a major milestone since the initial rollout of smart meters four years ago in Melaka.
"Part of a government-led initiative, the rollout of smart meters across Malaysia is intended to enrich the lives of consumers by providing greater accessibility, transparency and control over their daily energy consumption," it said.
TNB chief distribution network officer Datuk Ir. Baharin Din said It was well on track towards installing 1.5 million units by the end of 2021.
Baharin said a big factor in all of this was TNB's customers, who continue to seek more empowering ways to manage their energy consumption.
"Heading into 2021, we hope to see more customers take control from using smart meters, and being empowered to make energy-efficient choices for themselves and the nation as a whole, towards a greener and more sustainable energy future," he said.
TNB also reported a huge increase in the number of myTNB app users from 1.4 million to 4.7 million, representing an increase of 236 per cent from December 2019 to December 2020.
myTNB is a platform that enables homeowners to view and pay their bills digitally.
"As myTNB continues to enrich its features to support customers at any time and place, the announcement of nationwide lockdowns earlier this year has helped contribute towards more Malaysians adopting the digital platform to manage their account and energy consumption even more than before," it said.
TNB said while everyone was encouraged to download and use myTNB or visit the portal, it is especially beneficial to smart meter users, who in addition to being able to pay and view their bills, can also monitor their daily electricity usage.
"TNB hopes to double the smart meter installation efforts in Klang Valley for the remainder of 2021, with plans to expand into other areas of Malaysia in the near future," it added.
