KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has today unveiled the world's first commercial power plant to use the most efficient gas turbine technology produced by General Electric (GE).
The RM4.7 billion power plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor was another landmark of the national utility company's commitment to low-carbon economic activities, TNB said.
The inauguration was officiated by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
TNB said the power plant, also known as the Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant, uses natural gas fuel combustion technology capable of producing more than 60 per cent of electricity,.
"This contributes to the reduction of carbon footprint, thus fulfilling TNB slogan, environmentally friendly energy, for sustainable development," it said.
The power plant station is a joint venture between TNB and SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd Holding, the former holding a 70 per cent stake.
"Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant supplies 1,440 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid through two combined cycle gas turbine power plants, each with a capacity of 720 MW since early 2021.
"The power plant strengthens the generation capacity in Peninsular Malaysia to 26,744.8MW and becomes one of the notable landmarks for electricity generation industry development in Johor and the southern region," it said.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the station was a testament to TNB's commitment in contributing towards realising a low -carbon economy, without compromising in supplying stable electricity to the south and the entire Peninsula Malaysia.
"The development of the station is in line with the national goals and agenda in achieving the country's sustainability roadmap, which is to achieve 45 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity by 2030," said Takiyuddin.
TNB said the power plant's combined cycle method to generate energy was an eco-friendly alternative technology (cleantech) in line with its aspiration of emphasising sustainability and harmony of nature.
"It is also in line with the future of sustainable energy as well as ensuring reliable and eco-friendly energy supply," it added.
The power plant has been recognised as "Plant of the Year 2021" by the United States-based international power generation industry publication Power Magazine in July 2021.
It is fully operated and maintained by TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd's (TNB Genco) subsidiary,TNB Repair and Maintenance Sdn Bhd (Remaco).
TNB Genco is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNB that develops, operates and maintains the group's generation portfolio.
