KPJ, Samsung to drive precision medicine & diagnostics in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: KPJ Healthcare Bhd and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd have formed a partnership to advance precision medicine and diagnostics in Malaysia.

The groups plan to explore innovative technologies and collaborative opportunities over the next six months via a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday.

They said to ensure seamless synchronisation throughout the discussions, LAC Medical Supplies Sdn Bhd would be playing the key role as facilitator for the collaboration, ensuring the provision of complete information, services, and training requirements.

LAC Medical is a leading provider of medical equipment, devices and biomedical services in Malaysia.

"Precision medicine, which tailors medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient, has the potential to transform healthcare by improving patient outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, and enabling the development of more effective drugs and treatments," they said in a joint statement.

"Coupled with advanced imaging diagnostics and artificial intelligence, which are essential for precision medicine, enable healthcare providers to identify the genetic, molecular, and cellular characteristics of individual patients and to tailor the treatment accordingly," they added.

KPJ Healthcare and Samsung Electronics will work together to develop and deploy precision medicine and diagnostic solutions, with a focus on improving patient outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, and enabling the development of more effective drugs and treatments.

"Additionally, both parties will explore remote reporting system capabilities and smart hospital solutions for upcoming ambulatory care centres and new hospital projects," they added.

KPJ Healthcare said by leveraging assistive artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic technology and data analytics, the group aimed to improve patient care through unified outpatient systems, intra-hospital use of telemedicine, clinical innovation centers, and modernised hospital information system development.

This will be supported by its education arm, KPJ Healthcare University College under its research management centre.

Present during the MOU signing ceremony were Samsung Electronics corporate executive vice president and head of health and medical equipment business YK Kim, KPJ Healthcare officer-in-charge Norhaizam Mohammad and LAC Medical managing director YP Liew.

It was witnessed by KPJ Healthcare chairman Datuk Md Arif Mahmood.
