CYBERJAYA: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) affirms its commitment to the national implementation of 5G despite the government's plan to introduce a second network through a new entity in early 2024.
TM group chief executive officer Datuk Imri Mokhtar said it would be part of a task force, announced by the Communications and Digital Ministry, that would oversee the transition from a single wholesale network (SWN) under Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) to a dual-network.
"TM will be part of the task force. We also remain committed to the implementation of 5G in this country. With the widest fibre network, whether in the first phase as announced by the government or the next phase, TM is confident and committed to playing our role."
Imri was speaking to the media after the launch of TM Campus and Hari Raya open house here today.
On whether TM might take over DNB, Imri said it would hold further discussions and evaluations on the matter.
"Any development will be announced when any decision is made by TM," he said.
Yesterday, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry had agreed to form a task force to ensure the smooth implementation of the dual-network.

The task force was to ensure the implementation of the 5G network under DNB would achieve 80 per cent coverage in populated areas by end-2023, and the transition to the dual-network model in early 2024.
Previously, Fahmi said the government would introduce a second 5G network through a new entity to be established in early 2024 and change the current implementation model of 5G from SWN to a dual-network.
TM Campus not only houses the group's new headquarters but also TM Innovation Hub, TM Network Operations Centre, and TM Core Data Centre.
It sits on an 11.33-hectare area and will promote collaboration and foster innovation-driven by human capital.
Imri said the TM Campus was another significant achievement for the company.
