KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia managed to complete the 5G network implementation through a single wholesale network despite initial scepticism shared by various parties.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said Malaysia was the only country that had implemented a 5G network through this particular strategy, despite suggestions made by international organisations like the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) that the strategy was not possible.
He said in February last year, the country's 5G coverage was only at 36 per cent but the coverage managed to be increased enormously within a year with the strategy.
"In less than a year, we successfully implemented 80 per cent 5G coverage.
"We increased it from 36 per cent to 80 per cent in less than 10 months," Fahmi said when opening the Huawei Malaysia Supplier Ecosystem Convention 2024.
He added that the experience was not an easy one.
However, he said it had to be completed since it had already started before he was appointed to the cabinet.
Fahmi sid the process was made possible as the government understood the primary values provided by the 5G network specifically for industries and enterprises.
