KUALA LUMPUR: Evergreen Marine Corporation (EMC), one of the world's largest shipping companies, is once again making headlines for its extraordinary year-end bonus distribution.
Following an exceptional financial performance in 2024, the Taiwan-based shipping giant has rewarded its employees with a bonus of 20 months' salary.
For the first three quarters of 2024, EMC recorded consolidated revenue of NT$347.756 billion (approximately RM47 billion), marking a 67.98 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
The company also achieved impressive earnings per share (EPS) of NT$50.68 (RM6.91) and a profit margin of 39 per cent.
These outstanding results have allowed EMC to distribute an additional bonus of up to NT$190,000 (RM25,000) to its employees. However, this additional bonus will only be revealed after a shareholder meeting, adding an air of anticipation to the already generous payout.
For a typical employee earning around NT$60,000 (RM8,000) a month, the extra bonus of NT$190,000 (RM25,000) would be about 3.1 months' salary. If the company's fourth-quarter performance continues to soar, this bonus could increase to the equivalent of four months' salary.
This is not the first time EMC has made waves with its bonus offerings. In 2022, the company distributed a jaw-dropping bonus equivalent to 52 months' salary.
While this year's bonus may seem extraordinary, it is no surprise given EMC's position as a dominant force in the global shipping industry.
In addition to its leadership in container shipping, EMC offers logistics services and port management and operates some of the world's largest container ships, such as the Evergreen G-Class and Ever Ace. The company manages global shipping routes spanning Asia, Europe, America, and Africa, further cementing its status as a key player in international trade.
